The Shape of Sound

Sound is normally thought of as something heard, played on a device or maybe something felt from music playing through a speaker or through your fingers while plucking the strings of a guitar. Something that is not usually acknowledged is the act of seeing sound.

When soundwaves pass through surface, incredible patterns are created. Through various ceramic processes, I have captured the patterns that sound creates on slip-cast, porcelain plates. Therefore adding another sense to the experience of sound – sight.

The physicality of sound is evident in the vibrations it creates, which can be observed in various phenomena. When a bird sings, its breath carries the sound waves through the air, visibly affecting the surrounding environment. Similarly, in a sound amplifier, the movement of soundwaves can be seen as they travel through the device, causing components to vibrate in response to the frequency.

Nuances in the ceramic surface and the sound frequency create subtly varying patterns, unlocking a whole new world of visual sound.
